Oil Hydraulics and Pneumatics:- Hydraulic Oils

Types of oil and oil properties

  • What is Oil?
  • Function of Hydraulic Oils
  • Physical properties of the Hydraulic Oils

WHAT IS OIL?

  • A viscous liquid can derived and filtered from petroleum, especially for use as a fuel or lubricant.
  • An oil is any neutral, non polar chemical substance that is viscous liquid at ambient temperatures and is both hydrophobic and lipophilic.
  • Oils have a high carbon and hydrogen content and are usually flammable, sometimes toxic and surface active.

Function of Hydraulic Oils

  • To transmit the power
  • To lubricate the part of system internally
  • To act as coolant
  • To act is sealent

Physical properties of the Hydraulic Oils

  1. Mass Density
  2. Weight Density
  3. Specific Gravity
  4. Compressibility
  5. Viscosity(Dynamic & Kinematic viscosity)
  6. Viscosity index
  7. Flash point
